Collar GPS Rumi para vacas

How much does a GPS collar for cows cost? Price and what’s included

If you’re thinking about putting GPS on your cows, the first thing you want to know is how much it costs. The short answer is: less than many people think. With Rumi, Innogando’s GPS collar, the collar costs from €120 and the maintenance fee from €15 per year per collar.

But the price of a GPS collar for cows isn’t just the device. In this article we explain what goes into the cost, what payment models there are and how to know whether it pays off on your farm.

How much does a GPS collar for cows cost?

The cost of a GPS for cows almost always has three parts:

  • The collar. The device each animal wears: GPS, sensors, battery and, in Rumi’s case, a solar panel so you never have to recharge it.
  • The fee per collar. This is the service maintenance fee.
  • The antenna. It picks up the signal from the collars and lets them work even where there’s no mobile coverage.

With Rumi, the collar costs from €120 and the fee from €15 per year per collar, from 10 collars. The final price depends mainly on how many animals you want to equip: the more collars, the better the price.

What makes a GPS for cows more or less expensive?

Not all GPS collars are the same, and comparing price alone can be misleading. These are the differences that matter most:

  • Location only, or more. A basic tracker tells you where the cow is. A collar like Rumi also detects heat, alerts you if a calving gets complicated and monitors rumination and activity to warn you of possible health problems.
  • Coverage. Out in the hills there’s often no mobile signal. A system with its own antenna keeps working where a GPS that relies on the mobile network runs out of data.
  • Battery. A collar you have to recharge or change batteries on costs time. With solar charging you can forget about it.
  • Warranty and service. Out in the field, collars take knocks and bad weather. Check the warranty and who helps you if something goes wrong.

One-off payment or fee: Rumi’s models

Rumi has two payment options, designed for farms of different sizes:

  • Purchase (10 to 29 collars). You buy the collar in a one-off payment and then only pay the annual maintenance fee.
  • Flexible Purchase (from 30 collars). You make a reduced upfront payment per collar and pay an annual fee, with a 5-year contract. The more collars, the better the price.

What the price includes

All Rumi collars include a 10-year factory warranty (if it fails due to a manufacturing defect, we replace it free of charge) and 5 years of all-risk insurance against accidental breakage, knocks or falls. Neither the warranty nor the insurance covers loss or theft of the device.

What’s more, we design, manufacture and assemble the collars in Lugo, so behind each one there’s a team close to you that knows the countryside.

Is it worth putting GPS on your cows?

To find out, compare the cost with what it saves you. Think of the hours spent looking for animals in the hills, the heats that go unnoticed or a calving that gets complicated without anyone finding out in time. Each of those problems has a cost, even if we don’t always write it down.

What if I also want virtual fencing?

If you want to control where your cows graze without posts or wires, Rumi PRO adds virtual fencing to everything Rumi does. It will be available in spring 2027, from €22.80 per collar per year. We explain it in detail in virtual fencing for cattle: how it works and how much it costs.
